Basil Recipe Manager App Reviews

Minimalistic in a good way

I use this app quite a bit; the iPad version is a good companion in the kitchen, showing you which ingredients you have, the ability to set multiple timers, and highlighting the recipe step you are currently on. There are some minor usability issues that could be improved but overall a solid and well thought-out app.

Just the app I was looking for!

My online recipe db site was shutting down and I did not want to get my recipes locked to another website, so I went looking for an app that did not require an online account and could export to a portable format. Basil makes it easy to import and categorize recipes from a variety of well known websites, and provides a flexible system to import recipes from the rest. Its also great to use when Im cooking and has some smart features like ingredient cross-off, one touch timers and anti-lock when in recipe view. Recently one of my favourite sites changed their recipe format, but I submitted a bug report and it was fixed in a day. Well worth the price since I have gotten a lot of use out of it. Update: 2016-10-02: Like an idiot I hadnt backed up my data in a while and something went wrong and I could not open the app without crashing. I contacted the dev and he sent me a fixed version of my data. Still loving this app.

Total crap

The app does not work. It supports barely any recipe websites and the ones that it does support do not always work. If the website is unsupported the app forces you to manually highlight parts of the page. Since the app does not block ads or other unnecessary elements you either include random ads or other irreverent information. The highlighting itself is incredibly frustrating as iOSs implementation is broken. The app uses no iOS extension features. It not only doesnt use standard iOS design language but forces you to install a bookmark in Safari. Its 2016, we have had the iOS sharesheet for 2 years now. This app is terrible, crashy, fails to sync, and is a overall total disappointment.

Good simple program

Ive been using this for about 3 years now, and its always worked fine for me. Its a nice simple program, can be used offline to access recipes, and doesnt hog phone storage. It lacks some sophistication when populating the grocery list (frozen peas does not go in produce, it goes in frozen foods) but overall Im satisfied. Also, the one time I had a glitch, the developer responded to me personally, released an update soon after.

I love this app, but it keeps crashing

I love this app. It organizes all of the recipes I add, and makes a grocery list for you (even categorizes by isle). However, lately its been freezing upon opening. Ive had to delete and re download several times! The most recent time I lost a few recipes because I couldnt save them to my Dropbox before it froze. Please send out an update that fixes this!!

Great app

Im not sure why everyone is saying this app doesnt work. Ive been using for years and its great. It easily imports recipes from 52 major food/cooking sites. One issue (very minor to me) is that I cant import from SimplyRecipes.com but I have emailed support.

Great recipe App, lacking some critical features

The App is great for organizing recipes. Supports a lot of the common recipe web sites. Cons: - No ability to print recipes (so you can share them with your Mom who doesnt have the Internet or just put them in an old fashioned notebook). Only way to print is to email the recipes to yourself and then print them from your Mail App. - Export options limited to Email, but omit most of the metadata like pictures, etc. - No updates for a year. Is this App abandoned?

Perfect consumer service

Need french translation ! :-(

Essential tool !

In the land of internet I often search for recipes online, having a way to save the good ones is essential. This app works great, really easy to import and share recipes. Thank you !

Sending via Mail

If i want to Send a Recipe via Email all the steps are in the wrong order and the ingredients too! maybe because i rearranged them/added categories/groups later? please fix fast :(

Great app

Im very happy with is application. It makes importing recipes a snap. I exported all my old files as HTML and shared them from my Mac and importing them in was so easy. Customer support has been excellent and when I had a small issue I got immediate responses. Overall a great choice.

Good, but...

Crashes every time I try to add a recipe of my own. Also it resets when I complete the recipe and makes me input information again.

Enjoying this!

While not perfect, Ive been using this for a week now and have a fairly decent collection built. Suggestions made to the developer have been responded to (positively!) and I look forward to using this extensively in future. Especially like the direct integration from the internet. The first time I used it, the recipe was loaded in a split second. A good start!

This app is great so far. Really enjoying the auto "add" feature from some of my favorite recipe sites/blogs. Only downside is lack of ability to add a recipe photo. Im really missing this feature. Please add this to future updates!

Small glitches

Overall, this app is great. Finding and downloading a recipe is easy...and its beautifully saved in the app. HOWEVER, theres a couple of weak points: 1. When a search is done, I can only open one website to look at the recipe. If I want to look at another site, I need to go back to the home menu, reselect search, then re-enter the search criteria. I cant select one site after another within the results. 2. For some reason, the tag menu doesnt work before saving. I need to save the recipe, return to the main menu, open the recipe, and set the tags from there. (minor inconvenience). 3. It would be a PERFECT app if I could save email recipes. (tall order, perhaps?) Except for the first point that I find most frustrating, the app is incredibly useful.

Excellent

Although just started learning how to use this app, Im quite impressed. Very easy to import recipes. Nice interface. Particularly like that the photos expand when clicked, for more details.

But help!!

I love this APP. I transferred all of my favorite recipes over before moving from Africa to Switzerland. But, even with the most recent update, it keeps crashing on me. It wont even open now. Please help?

Perfect

Instead of focussing on glitz, this app is functional. It has an AWESOME import mechanism that lets you get your recipes in easily. I have most of my recipes stored in Evernote currently. I was quickly able to open the recipes in Safari and import them with a few clicks.

Great app

Terrific app for organizing all the many good recipes I have found online, and in my books. Will be using this exclusively for now on.

Crash after crash.

I loved this app until this morning! It crashes immediately after I open it! Please fix this!
